I have no idea if this will all work out, but we’ll find out!

Today Kathy and I are announcing our TBRs for the Queer Lit Readathon happening June 10-16th. Really quick before we get started, Kathy and I had a quick discussion about what exactly lit means, and people often take it to mean fiction only. But if you go by the dictionary definition: “Literature is a term used to describe written and sometimes spoken material. Derived from the Latin word literature meaning “writing formed with letters,” literature most commonly refers to works of the creative imagination, including poetry, drama, fiction, nonfiction, journalism, and in some instances, song.” So essentially, anything that’s creatively written falls under this definition of literature. I mention this because I have some nonfiction books in my list. Okay, let’s get started.

I have five, or more, books picked out for this. I tried to see if I could find books that cover multiple challenges, and if this all works out, I will have not covered only three challenges, and that might change after I’ve read some of these. I will tell you the book, and what challenge I primarily chose it for and the secondary challenges it also covers. There are some that I think do fit the challenge, but I’m not entirely sure so let me know if I’m wrong. And of course, I will let you know the final result in my wrap-up!

Mean Little Deaf Queer: This is a memoir of a deaf queer person, so this covers a book with a disabled main character. It also covers #ownvoices.

The Brightsiders: Obviously, I’m going to be doing the group read! I’ve ordered a copy for myself and it should be arriving on June 1st! I also ordered I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter with it, but it will not be used for this readathon. The Brightsiders is for the group read, but it also covers the contemporary book challenge.

History is All You Left Me: This one covers A LOT of the challenges! I mainly chose it because it was a recommendation AND a popular book. Also, it’s a contemporary, non-coming out, and #ownvoices. And! The cover’s mostly shades of blue, so that meets the cover color challenge.

Drifting Toward Love: Black, Brown, Gay, and Coming of Age on the Streets of New York: This one is a nonfiction book, telling the stories of young gay men of color. This meets the person of color main character challenge, and maybe a few others.

The Prince and the Dressmaker: I recently ordered it, and it’s very possible it’ll be arriving on the day I leave for LA. Fingers crossed it arrives before that! If it does arrive in time, it meets the following challenges: trans main character, a fantasy book, and a graphic novel. Since I don’t know for sure if it’ll arrive in time, I’m going to choose two books as backup because I want to read these back-to-back. Those books are Transgender History and Gender Outlaws. Those will still cover the trans main character challenge.

And that is my list for this readathon. With those five books, I cover 13 of 16 challenges. The only challenges I did not meet are: a book with an ace main character, a literary re-telling, and a book where the main character realizes they’re queer. I assume that one of these books will cover that last one, and they might cover the ace character, I don’t know yet. We’ll find out!
