It’s pride month!!
Hello and welcome! First things first, the shirt I’m wearing in the video! It’s designed and made by the same person who made my other ASL Pride shirt. This shirt spells out PRIDE, and was all designed and printed by a deaf gay man, so it would be great if you supported him! Here’s a link to where you can buy it. While I’m on the subject, I’d like to remind you all to do your best to support queer businesses and businesses that actually make an effort to support queer people. There are plenty of corporations that’ll slap rainbows, rainbows, rainbows on their products for only pride month, but don’t actually contribute anything to the queer community. Let’s make sure our money goes to people who really deserve it yeah? I’ll leave some links below for you to check out.
Now, pride month! It’s a month for celebration, being proud of our queerness, resistance to those who don’t want us to exist. Never forget, pride didn’t start out like this. It started out as a commemoration of the Stonewall Riots in 1969. So while you all celebrate, also remember history and where we’ve come from, how far we have come, and how far we still have to go. 32 states still have no law for conversion therapy, 26 states have no laws specifically prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity, only 5 states plus DC prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity for foster care and adoption by queer parents. And that’s only in the US. At least 70 countries have national laws criminalizing same-sex relations, we still have a long way to go globally.
That’s why we need Pride month. That’s why we need to remember our history.
