Hello! Today is very exciting, because Kathy and I are announcing the 13th round of Queer Lit Readathon, on the 13th of May. We’ve come up with some fun challenges to honor this number. Our June round runs for the whole month, to celebrate Pride month and give you plenty of time to read as many queer books as you want! Our bingo board has 16 different prompts, and you can use one book for multiple prompts. Kathy and I like to aim for all 16, but that’s just us. Do whatever you want! All of these prompts come with the requirement that the book is queer in some way. [Video cuts to a slightly different angle, Rogan in a different shirt.] Editing Rogan here. I forgot to add, Kathy and I don’t have a co-host this round. For a while, for each challenge, we’ve given you three recommendations – one from me, one from Kathy, and one from our guest. But this time, we decided we would ask the community to give us your recommendations, then we’ll pick one for each challenge. So please leave your recommendations in the comments! I look forward to seeing what you recommend. [Video cuts back to the main video.] Let’s get into it!
First is Graphic, any form of visual media. Next, we have two Group Reads. The first book is The Skin and Its Girl by Sarah Cypher, a queer Palestinian story. The second book is Under the Udala Trees by Chinelo Okparanta, a queer Nigerian story. Both of these cover a few of the other prompts, and you don’t have to read both. Our third prompt is Number in the Title, which is self explanatory. Bonus points for having the number 13! Another self explanatory prompt is Choose Your Own Category. Let us know what you choose! Next prompt is an Anthology, which I love for a bunch of stories in one book. It will be June, so not that many rainy days depending on where you are, but pick up a Rainy Day Read, a book you’ve been putting off for the right day. The next prompt is very open to interpretation, Night. I can’t wait to see how you choose a book for this. Then we want you to go International. This is a book written outside of your home country/continent, it can be translated or originally written in your native language. We want to recognize Juneteenth, so the next prompt is Black History. This month is also Immigrant Heritage Month, so the next prompt is to read an Immigrants story. It’s summer, and national parks in the US want you to visit them, so do that and read about the Great Outdoors. It’s also Mental Health awareness month, and that’s our next prompt. Our special prompt for the 13th round is Creepy Queers, get supernatural and horror with it! Next, staying with legends and folklore, we have Non-European Mythology. This is any mythos that originates from outside of Europe. This can be a retelling, inspired by, or the original myth. Our next to last prompt is Continued, which is picking up the next book in a series, or another work by an author you’ve read before, up to you how you interpret it. And finally, another one word prompt that’s very open to interpretation, Magic.
That’s all of the 16 prompts. Again, the rules for this are very flexible. Really, the only requirement is to read queer. All of the details, FAQ, and social media can be found on my website, linked here. We’re really looking forward to this round! Bye.
